The heart of a blue whale can weigh more than 1,300 lbs (590 kg) and is the size smaller than a car. This massive heart beats 8 to 10 times per minute, and its sound can be heard from over 2 miles (3.2 km) away. Blue whales have large arteries that a fully grown human can swim through.
Blue whales are the largest animals on Earth and truly fascinating creatures. At birth, a baby blue whale is already 25 feet long, about the same size as an adult killer whale. These amazing creatures can drink up to 150 gallons (568 liters) of milk a day, and can gain as much as 200 lbs (90 kg) per day in their first year. They feed almost exclusively on krill, which are small, shrimp-like invertebrates that are on average only 1 or 2 centimeters long. Adult blue whales can eat 4 to 6 tons of krill a day!
Blue whales are also the loudest animals on the planet, with vocalizations that can be heard for hundreds of miles underwater. They are also incredibly long-lived, with lifespans of up to 90 years.
As adults, blue whales can grow up to 110 feet (33 m) in length and weigh as much as 180 tons. They have a heart that is the size of a small car, and their arteries are large enough for a human to swim through. It’s fascinating to think that throughout history, Earth has been home to some of the biggest animals, but the largest one of them all exists in our timeline, swimming in the deep ocean right now.
